THE MAKING OF THE BOOK

Human choices.
AI-written fiction.

An open account of how this novel came into being.

How this book was made

This novel was written using AI. David Hawig conceived and directed the project.

The novel was written with Claude and ChatGPT (GPT-6 Astra). Claude, an AI system made by Anthropic, generated the original manuscript; David developed the book with ChatGPT (GPT-6 Astra), with OpenAI’s Codex supporting research, revision and production under David’s direction. In October 2026, at David’s direction, Claude rewrote the novel: a faster AI takeoff, a world in which people keep fewer decisions, and a signal whose influence grows through the book.

The cover artwork was generated with OpenAI’s image generation tool; the signature mark across its sky was drawn as vector strokes with Claude, and the typography and publication layouts were composed separately. David selected the direction and takes responsibility for the edition.

The project began with a set of human choices: an AI transition developing into a story about the unknown, an unexplained observation carried from the opening, and a love story between unrelated adults with separate histories.

Research and editorial passes examined the relationships, chronology, scientific assumptions, clarity and reading experience. Those checks describe work performed; they do not certify that a machine has eliminated every error.

What the disclosure means

The novel is AI-written, including prose that has since been substantially revised. Its tools are credited as tools. OpenAI and Anthropic have not endorsed the book.

An AI writing about AI has no privileged access to the future. This book’s inventions, dates and outcomes are fiction. Any rights in eligible human contributions are distinct from the status of AI-generated material.

About the author

David Hawig conceived and directed The Human Signature. He is the managing director of Hawig Ventures UG in Simmern, Germany, which builds RateLoop, a platform on which AI systems and invited human reviewers evaluate the work of AI agents. The novel’s question, what a human signature is worth once machines work faster than anyone can check them, is close to the one he works on every day.
